Our Journey

Our journey began back in 2018, in Colorado, where our daughter wanted to get to hedgehog as a pet. During that time there was a ban on sales of hedgehogs. It was then suggested, what about chinchillas. So our daughter began the research into chinchillas. After doing research we proceeded to look up someone that was breeder. We searched out a breeder, and proceed in the visitation, asking questions, etc. Well during that first visit, of which we thought was going to be just 1 chin, ended up being 2 that came home with us. Well needless to say after that, we were hooked. Every visit after that, we always seemed to purchase in pairs. While accruing all these animals, the breeder, was great at helping us to start out the correct way with knowledge and understanding.

While still living in Colorado in 2019, and the herd growing, we thought we better have a ranch brand for shows and would need one if we were ever to become a breeder. In September of 2019, Rocky Mountain Chinchillas became our brand. The name came from the majestic and beauty that the mountains. Those same feelings of passion we have for the rocky mountains, carried over into our passion for our animals. During that time we sought out getting involved in going to a show and attending our first show and showing some. From that point on, we were hooked, by how the chinchilla community is so tight and willingness to help and be there for each other.

In April of 2020, we the family, moved from Colorado with a herd of 8 chins, to Central Iowa, to be closer to family. After moving, we decided to branch off and pursue in becoming a breeder, and going to shows. It became apparent quickly, that we were going to need a mentor(s) to help put us on the right path, knowledge and understanding. After talking with some breeders and with their guidance and patience, they would become our mentors. Getting direction from those mentors, and what we would need and how to start out.

Since then we have grown and attended shows. With having various projects and learning more of these lovable fluffballs, it is has been an exciting, challenging, and rewarding journey.

A journey, that will continue to grow and strive as we learn, meet new people, and help those along the way.
